Galway City Mosque & Cultural Centre

Construction of the new Galway City Mosque & Cultural Centre
PROJECT SECTOR:
COMPLETED:
2013

The design, assisted by the London based Muslim Architects, achieved the orientation of the Prayer Hall to Mecca within an octagonal form, while meeting the requirements of the Muslim Community regarding access and services for the use of the building as a Culture Centre.

The elevations were designed to gently express the function and cultural purpose of the building, with the dome and minaret being the important signature features. The dome floats on a ring of glass and light reflects from the minaret opes. The external finish consists of smooth cut limestone and natural hydraulic lime render giving the building a unique finish. It shows a timeless classical elegance, a combination of traditional and contemporary, blending Muslim and Gaelic features to generate a welcome to all at the Mosque of Mary in Ballybrit.
